Lemon Balm Growing Advice

Sowing Indoors

  • You can sow Lemon Balm seeds indoors throughout the year but to produce garden-ready plants, sow a few seeds indoors during spring, from March-May.  Sow seeds in a module tray or into pots and cover lightly with growing medium.  They will germinate within a few weeks in a warm position.  When seedlings are large enough to handle, you can transplant them into individual pots and grow on indoors.  When the risk of frost has passed you can move your plants outside, after hardening off.

Sowing Outdoors

  • During the warmer summer months, you can sow lemon balm seeds directly outdoors, sowing thinly and covering them with a growing medium.  Lemon Balm grows vigorously, so it's important not to sow too many seeds.  In the UK starting seeds undercover tends to be far more reliable.

Ongoing care and harvest

  • Lemon Balm spreads aggressively, it might be a good idea to keep it contained.
  • Cut back regularly to promote fresh growth.
